As we settle into the reality of remote work that has extended from weeks, to months, to now possibly over a year, the solutions and workarounds that got us through the first few months need some refinement.

While working from the lake house, Zoom happy hours, and pjs on the couch are the new norm, counter-forces to this newfound flexible environment need to be addressed.

The dynamics of work have clearly changed. In KPMG’s American Worker pulse survey, employees reported higher levels of satisfaction and engagement with employers, but most also indicated increased work demands and declining mental health since a survey in April.

Managers must understand employee personas and how they shape the work experience and also understand and manage the business implications of how and where employees are working. A working parent managing remote learning for school-age kids will have a different experience than a recent college grad moving back in with their parents. Working out-of-state for certain periods of time can have business tax implications, less-than-ideal home workstations may lead to physical fatigue, and lack of physical connection with teammates can cause turnover issues.

Employees have to stay visible for project and promotion opportunities but also must separate the work-day from their personal life. Remote work also offers opportunities to find new roles in other geographic locations. Honing virtual networking skills in this digital age is crucial.

The Healthcare Business Women’s Association is gathering a panel of professionals from different organizational roles to discuss how employees working anywhere and everywhere has changed the way they manage and the way they’re doing business.
