People tend to see the world through the lens of their own identity. This lens is shaped by cognitive thought patterns that can shape judgement…good and bad: conscious or unconscious biases
When unconscious, it is also known as implicit bias. It is a belief, or attitude toward any social group. Due to implicit biases, we may often attribute certain qualities or characteristics to all members of a specific group, a phenomenon known as stereotyping, often based on race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, ability, age and so on.
It is important to remember that implicit biases operate almost entirely on an unconscious level. Explicit biases and prejudices are intentional and controllable, implicit biases are less so.
In private, as well as in professional life, knowing our own unconscious biases is a great advantage. Halo or Horn effect or both? What bias can you find in yourself? What have you experienced?
