Erik Smith

Erik D. Smith, Ph.D. is a Principal with Deloitte Consulting’s Strategy Practice. For over 15 years, he’s worked across health care, including manufacturers, payers, providers and others in the space – both in the US and around the world. The majority of Erik’s work has focused on the commercial side of bio-pharma, covering corporate, BU, franchise, product and country levels, across numerous therapeutic areas, asset and product stages.
Erik has delivered new strategies and tested those already in use, for clients at all levels, including Boards. He’s launched innovation initiatives, and updated risk management programs. Erik brings particular expertise in understanding uncertainty, both for long-term strategy and for short-term tactics. He’s an advanced user of scenario planning and other simulation approaches, has published on the subject, and taught training courses. With HBA, Erik has served on the Advisory Board of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter, and more recently on the Advisory Board for the West Region as well as the Strategic Alliances Committee for the Board.
Erik holds both a Ph.D. in demography and an M.A. in socio-cultural anthropology from University of California. Berkeley, and a B.A. in political science, with minors in social ecology and philosophy, from UC Irvine.
