Event description
Pricing of pharmaceuticals in the United States has been, and continues to be, a polarizing issue of wide reaching impact in our industry. Many headlines have highlighted drugs with significant price increases and noted more generally the high price of curative medicines with restricted reimbursement. Advocates for price controls say these prices are unsustainable and something has to change. However, pharmaceutical companies invest more in research and development relative to sales than any other manufacturing industry – more than 18% which is six times the average of most companies. This is a system with a high failure rate and one in which pricing for one drug is paying the development costs for many other failed drugs. When competition hasn’t entered the market due to quality issues or level of manufacturing complexity, manufacturers want to be rewarded for their innovations.
Drug pricing, like other goods, should account for the risk incurred, but also have a measure of fair value and transparency of outcomes delivered. But the question is, how do we define “value”? The value of drugs may vary significantly from medication to medication, what’s being treated and outcomes delivered. Add in curative drugs and it becomes increasingly difficult to value the years, months or even days added to a patient’s life.
Please join us on the campus of Express Scripts as we hear from Kim White of Numerof & Associates as she leads a panel of experts in a discussion on this very topical issue. They will discuss the different models being considered, their challenges and opportunities, as well as the impact each presents to manufacturers, providers, payers and patients.
