Event description
If you’re an industry leader (or want to become one) here’s your chance to participate in a results-driven group mentoring program. This program provides a confident and "safe" forum to advance the professional growth and development of mentees. Mentoring takes place in small groups (circles), which typically include one to two mentors and four to five mentees. Each group shares a common area of focus and meets in-person on a monthly basis to help mentees make progress toward the goals they set. Areas of focus offered in the 2016 mentoring program include:
1. Handling challenging conversations/communication
Focus: Learn new communication strategies for more effective conversations.
2. Initiating and driving change
Focus: Leading change (This is not the same as navigating change).
3. Improving emotional intelligence
Focus: Learn skills to improve your emotional intelligence, with an emphasis on strengthening relationships, decision
making and communication.
4. Navigating organizational politics
Focus: Learn how to quickly assess the political climate within an organization and adapt to unspoken norms
within a group (e.g. peers, teams, organizations)
5. Leading formal and informal teams for high-impact results
Focus: Leading teams by using the skills and strengths of team members to maximize team results and reduce team
fatigue.
Program structure
- Mentoring takes place in groups (circles)
- Each mentoring group is made up of one to two mentors and four to five mentees who share a common area of focus
- The program includes the kickoff event (May 11), five group mentoring sessions and a wrap-up/celebratory event
Mentor or mentee?
Mentees are emerging leaders. They have a strong sense of their development needs and can identify one or more areas in which they need mentoring support. They set a specific goal at the beginning of the program and work to achieve it. Mentees must have the time to prepare for their group’s meetings, fully participate in these sessions and then “do the work” -- that is, be willing to stretch, take risks and use resources to tackle their mentoring goal. To make the most of the program, mentees should plan to spend a minimum of six hours per month on program-related work and activities.
Mentors are seasoned leaders with significant experience in the healthcare industry or related services. They have a keen sense of their own strengths coupled with the ability and commitment needed to guide their mentees. Mentors are willing to share of themselves, -- relaying stories and anecdotes from their careers and recounting successes and failures -- and offer ideas and approaches as well as identify tools and resources. Most mentors have at least ten years’ experience in a director-level or higher position and have developed both individuals and teams. They are the cornerstone of this program, donating their time and talents to their groups.
The kickoff event on May 11 is when mentees and mentors meet their groups and begin to work together. Both mentees and mentors should be able to attend this event in person.
Applying for the 2016 group mentoring program is a two-part process:
1. Register for the program via this page; mentees pay the course fee now*
2. Complete the mentee or mentor application survey, which will be sent to applicants via email immediately following registration.
*Applicants to the program must complete both registration and the application survey in order to be considered for the program. Any applicants not assigned to a mentoring group in 2016 will be notified via email and all associated course fees, if any, will be refunded in full.*
Mentees must be HBA members - If you are accepted into the program, and are not a current HBA member, you must join the HBA by the kickoff event on May 11.
Mentors must either be HBA members or an employee of a Sponsor organization - If you are accepted into the program, and are not a current HBA member or an employee of a Sponsor organization, you must join the HBA by the kickoff event on May 11.
Please note that:
