Webinar description
In today's flat, team-based and relationship-driven organizations, being able to influence others is paramount in advancing ideas and initiatives. What skills are involved in developing the ability to influence? What pitfalls can be avoided? And are there any special considerations in exerting influence in the absence of authority?
Join this lively discussion and learn more about opportunities to influence, influencing styles, and the skills you’ll need to improve your effectiveness. Hear more about how to sweep people into action and mobilize the energy of others. By identifying what motivates people -- their interests and their passions -- you’ll be better able to influence and lead from wherever you are in the organization.
HBA is pleased to welcome Barry Dornfeld, PhD to the seventh webinar in the Career Conversations series. Barry is principal, Center for Applied Research, and leader of the firm's life sciences group. He has taught courses on influence and negotiation at The Wharton School, Cornell University and other executive education programs around the world. Barry is co-author of the recently published book, “The Moment You Can't Ignore: When Big Trouble Leads to a Great Future.” He received his doctoral degree in communications from the Annenberg School of the University of Pennsylvania and values his experience as an anthropologist and filmmaker, which trained him to ask questions and listen for answers -- key skills needed to influence and persuade.
Providing an executive lens to this discussion is Annalisa Jenkins, MBBS, MRCP, CEO of gene therapy company Dimension Therapeutics. A biopharma thought leader for more than 20 years, she has built and led teams advancing programs from scientific research through clinical development, regulatory approval and into healthcare systems globally. Prior to joining Dimension Therapeutics, she was executive vice president, head of global research and development at Merck Serono. Annalisa began her career as a medical officer with the British Royal Navy during the Gulf conflict, rising to the rank of Surgeon Lieutenant Commander. She graduated from St. Bartholomew's Hospital (London) and trained in cardiovascular medicine in the UK National Health Service. She has a strong commitment to advancing the presence of women in science and healthcare, sits on the HBA Advisory Board and, in 2014, was named HBA Woman of the Year. In this webinar, she will share her thoughts and perspectives on leading through influence and provide examples and stories from her remarkable career.
Moderating this conversation is Laurie Wessels, president of the Wessels Group. Ms. Wessels is a leader development coach, consultant and trainer. She works with executives, teams and emerging leaders, blending strategic planning and decision making, and leadership behaviors to enhance organizational effectiveness and sustainable leadership. Prior to coaching, she spent 15 years in the pharmaceutical industry. She is a past president of the HBA Chicago chapter and a member of the HBA Career Conversations team.
