HBA CAREER TRANSFORMATIONS AFFINITY GROUP AND HBA PHILADELPHIA SUBURBS PRESENT

Fireside Chat & Workshop: Negotiate with Impact

Negotiating and influence are critical skills to advance within organizations and get what you want – both personally and professionally. As you work more cross-functionally, it’s important to understand what you need, what your organization or key partners need, and how to reach a solution that works for both sides. Join the Philadelphia Suburbs Chapter and Career Transformations Affinity Group in this fireside chat and workshop to learn from global negotiator, Jennifer Paster Detmer, and senior human resources leader, Claire Holvey, on how to apply simple technical negotiation skills to everyday situations at home and at work. They will walk you through how to move from a basic trade-off negotiation to implementing co-creation skills to find solutions that add value for both sides.

Bring a real-world situation you want to influence so you can lean into expert advice and use the hands-on “Negotiate with Impact” worksheet to start to lay out your thoughts, pressure test your ideas in small groups, and brainstorm your next steps in a safe space.
Learning Objectives:

1. Understand how technical negotiation skills can lead to better outcomes in all areas of your life where you have a vested interest in the outcome: promotions, salary and benefits negotiations, contract negotiations, cross-functional project collaborations, and/or even deciding what you want for your take-out dinner with your partner.
2. Learn the power of shared goals and the skills required to get the information you need to form them.
3. Know how to build an influence map of the key stakeholders in a negotiation to determine your strategy.
4. Recognize the power of benchmarking your “deal” based on historic transactions, identify gaps in understanding, and how to use this to decide when to anchor a negotiation to ensure your negotiation starts off in the right range.
5. Define your Best alternative to No Agreement (BATNA) and how to use it to inform your negotiation and planning.

Learn the skills, get real-world insights on impactful applications, and increase your ability to influence and advocate for what you want or need whether it be with your boss, peers, or even with family and friends. You will leave this jam-packed session understanding key negotiation terms, how to apply them – and hopefully having identified the next step you want to take in your area of interest.
