Event description
Centuries ago, apothecaries in Europe and the United States formulated mixtures of herbs and alcohol to remedy digestive problems, pain, anxiety and even the common cold. Modern medicine, for these same maladies, integrates contemporary pharmaceutical practices, which are continuously evolving.
Warren Bobrow, author of Apothecary Cocktails: Restorative Drinks from Yesterday and Today, will open the program by discussing the history of apothecary liqueurs, bitters and tonics, in addition to how healing herbs, flowers and spices in traditional apothecary recipes are being resurrected for taste and the faint promise of a cure. Warren grew up in a family where the “apothecary cocktail” was believed to be a benefit to health at any age – from child to adult. After his presentation, Warren will share a sample of one of his apothecary cocktails with the audience.
Dr. Andrew Peterson, Dean and professor at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, home to the first pharmacy college in the country, will then bring the audience from apothecary to the modern day world of pharmacy. Dr. Peterson will take the audience to the future of medicine and health policy – how pharmacy and the pharmacist will evolve as healthcare evolves and the influence that pharmacy will have on the future of medical treatment.
With registration to this program, you can order a copy of Apothecary Cocktails, Warren Bobrow’s first book, for an additional $18.00. The book will be mailed to you post-event.
