Event description
More women than ever are entering and exceling in healthcare professions. Yet, gender parity at the highest levels remains elusive. It may surprise you to know that a wide array of invisible and surprising biological forces, having little to do with gender itself, play a key role in shaping women’s professional success. And by making these invisible forces visible, we are able to invoke conscious strategies to transcend and leverage them.
During this event we will explore:
• The biological importance of belonging, the myriad ways work environments can signal to women that they don’t
belong and the resulting impact on focus, drive and ambition.
• How our unconscious perceptions of status and power regulate our behavior.
• How social identity and stereotype threats affect performance.
• How to translate these understandings into practical strategies for success.
Along the way we will answer some perplexing questions:
• Why do so many high potential women rapidly lose ambition at the outset of their career, and what can be done to
sustain their drive?
• Why are women perceived as taking fewer risks, being less bold and acting tentatively?
• Why do women drop out of STEM fields, sometimes after having invested years of hard work in developing a career?
• Why do those women who do reach power often have the reputation of not supporting other women?
Join us for an engaging dinner discussion with Janet Crawford, founder and CEO, Cascadance, Inc. A pioneer in applying neuroscience to business, she helps Fortune 500 leaders and high potential startups cultivate productive, innovative and collaborative cultures through understanding and designing for the invisible biological architecture that drives human behavior.
As a scientist a twenty-year veteran of Silicon Valley, Janet is keenly interested in the challenges facing women in science and technology. For over a decade, she has studied and applied research on stereotype threat, unconscious bias and power dynamics. She is published in The Guardian, Forbes and The Huffington Post, and speaks internationally on the issue, including TEDx San Diego 2014.
Along with renowned somatic leadership practitioner, Wendy Palmer, Janet co-authored “Leadership Embodiment: How the Way We Sit and Stand Can Change the Way We Think and Speak.” She holds a masters from Stanford University and a BA from U.C. Berkeley. She has served as faculty for the Kauffman Center for Venture Education and the JFK University Graduate School of Psychology, and is a member of the Association for Psychological Science and The Social and Affective Neuroscience Society.
