CANCELLED: Personal Stories of Fitness Journeys

Join the New England Fit to Lead Affinity Group for Personal Stories of Fitness Journeys, inspiring stories of two sisters supporting one another towards healthier lifestyles.

Dawn Kumiega is our HBA President, Programming Center of Excellence for the New England Region. After having previously tried a diet program and regaining the weight, she embarked on a new journey to health in 2020. Her goal was to lose 75 pounds and make healthier choices. By making small changes in eating and exercising and by setting incremental goals, Dawn has averaged weight loss of 1 pound/week for 36 consecutive weeks and has maintained a workout streak of ≥60 active minutes for >130 consecutive days.

Debbie Schinker founded Bonvie (French for “Good Life”) in 2013 to help leaders define and attain a good life. In 2019, she was shocked to discover that she was clinically obese for the first time in her life. Debbie's keys to success were commitment to long-term goals, personal flexibility with workouts and nutrition, and ample doses of self-grace. She started running, joined a women's running group, and sought out fun exercise like swing dancing, kayaking, snowboarding, and high ropes courses. Despite requiring surgery for a broken ankle in early 2020, Debbie met her workout goal of exercising an average of 5 days of week and attained a clinically healthy weight in mid-2020.

Working with nutritionists and bariatric physicians to apply the latest nutrition and food science to their journeys were key for Dawn and Debbie. Determining what worked for their personal needs and lifestyles allowed them to set individual goals while still supporting each other during their unique journeys. Dawn and Debbie coached each other, shared tips and tools, and created healthy challenges to motivate one another to stay on track towards achieving their goals.

Learn how to set attainable goals, maintain consistency, and work with an accountability partner to achieve your health and wellness goals!
