DEI SELF-FOCUSED SKILL-BUILDING (Part 3): Learn how to Build Inclusion and Dismantle Inequities
If you have been doing, reading or hearing about Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) work, the words “systemic oppression” or (when narrowed to one protected class dimension, for instance) “systemic racism” are familiar terms. Sometimes you’ll hear “structural” instead of “systemic,” too. Used to describe that a complex infrastructure(s) reiterate and maintain inequities, coming to grips with these terms and the reality can feel very overwhelming.
This session is geared to bringing what can seem untouchable and amorphous into focus… to realize that these infrastructures can be examined, dismantled and replaced by choices that are equitable and inclusive.
By the end of our time, you will be able to:
(1) Understand that our infrastructures are socially created, which means they can also be socially adjusted or removed
(2) Recognize how structures both create and re-create the harmful, inequitable messaging, actions and outcomes
(3) See how hidden these structures are – and learn some methods that hold them in place
(4) Examine a structural example using a rubric that shows you how the structure is built and gives you the blocks for choosing an equitable path instead
