HBA Europe Event Series ‘How Women Rise’ – Event 1; Focus on Career Returnships
Women as well as men will take breaks throughout the course of their career for various reasons; familial, health-related and personal projects, as examples. However, statistics demonstrate that women are disproportionately affected by breaks for caring responsibilities. A recent report by McKinsey shows that, in September 2020 in the US, 80% of the people who exited the workforce were women and mothers were 3 times more likely to be responsible for childcare and domestic duties during the same period.
In Switzerland, an estimated 54,000 university-educated women don’t work, presumably due to family caring responsibilities. And one thing that is common for women worldwide who have taken a career break; it is difficult to re-enter the workforce and almost impossible to re-enter in a position of advancement relative to her previous role.
In this changing world of work, which has seen a rise in the ‘gig economy’ and remote working and a decline in the former ‘jobs for life’, we examine what companies can and are doing to tap into the latent pool of highly qualified and motivated women who want to re-enter the workforce. In this event, we’ll look at the concept of career return programs by highlighting a successful example – Johnson & Johnson’s Re-Ignite program.
You’ll hear from the program founder and current global lead, as well as from a European Re-Ignite hiring manager and a former Re-Ignite program graduate, with the session culminating in a round-table discussion and an opportunity for the audience to pose their own questions.
Speaker Biographies
Carina Furlong
Carina is a Leadership Development Consultant and Executive coach, who supports organisations with the progression of their inclusion & diversity, working parents and female leadership pipeline agendas.
Sarah Klopfer
Sarah Klopfer is the Program Leader of the global Re-Ignite return-to-work program at Johnson & Johnson. In this role, Sarah works to help individuals return to their professional passions after a career break.
Liz Markus
Liz Markus is the global founder of the Re-Ignite program and former program lead. Liz was the driving force for making Re-Ignite what it is today, a truly international initiative to help women (and men!), achieve their full career potential.
Marguerite O’Sullivan
Marguerite O Sullivan is currently the Senior Engineering & Innovation Manager Johnson & Johnson, where she works to build organizational capability and STEM talent by leveraging her strategic abilities to influence, drive change, and effectively communicate internally and externally.
Zoe Lawson
Zoe Lawson is a Senior Scientist at Johnson & Johnson, where she works on the large drug molecule platform for Janssen, the pharmaceutical division of the organization. She is also a recent Re-Ignite alumna, having graduated from the program in 2021.
