We’ve all, at one time or another, worked up the courage to have a conversation with someone, only to find that a few words into the discussion the other person begins lobbing bombs at us. We feel our pulse quicken, become sick to our stomachs, defensive and wonder what we can do to keep ourselves from walking away defeated. Our first impulse is to try to reason, argue or ignore the irrational person, and what we quickly learn is that instead, the encounter escalates.
Irrational people typically follow a predictable pattern, and the key to successfully preparing for facing them—and not falling apart when you do—can make all the difference in changing the dynamic of the conversation. This webinar will give you a brief look into the science behind the other person’s irrational behavior, tips for how to recognize it when it is happening and lastly how to keep yourself from being triggered into becoming defensive and slipping into irrationality.

She’s run businesses and led teams inside a handful of major companies, so she’s steeped in the real world, and understands the stresses and demands of busy executive life. Susan possesses an impressive list of credentials in this area with a Graduate Certificate Executive and Professional Coaching from The University of Texas at Dallas Naveen Jindal School of Management. She has also earned a Certified Stakeholder Centered Coach from Marshall Goldsmith Stakeholder Centered Coaching, and earned her bachelor of arts in psychology from St. John’s University.
Providing an executive lens to this discussion is Cathy Skala, vice president, touchstone program leader at Baxter Healthcare Corporation. Cathy started out in commercial architecture and after several years, she made a career change into information technology working for multiple healthcare companies, including Abbott and Hospira which was recently acquired by Pfizer. She then moved to mergers and acquisitions where she has led both divestitures and integrations, including the $4B acquisition of Gambro AB in 2013. Cathy is passionate about diversity not only in her career but at Baxter as well. She is honored to have served as the immediate past co-leader for Baxter Women Leaders, Baxter’s first Business Resource Group and the winner of the 2014 HBA ACE award.
Moderating this conversation is Laurie Wessels, president of the Wessels Group. Ms. Wessels is a leader development coach, consultant and trainer. She works with executives, teams and emerging leaders, blending strategic planning and decision making, and leadership behaviors to enhance organizational effectiveness and sustainable leadership. Prior to coaching, she spent 15 years in the pharmaceutical industry. She is a past president of the HBA Chicago chapter and a member of the HBA Career Conversations team.
