HBA PHOENIX PRESENTS

Emotion-Based Gender Stereotypes as a Barrier to Women Obtaining Top Leadership Roles

The belief that women are more emotional than men is one of the strongest gender stereotypes in Western culture. National polls over three decades have found that both men and women believe that women are more emotional than men and are not suitable for key leadership roles. Because women are less likely to control their outward display of emotion, people infer that women are less able to control the extent that emotions influence their decisions and actions. Therefore, both men and women conclude that women are less rational and objective, less able to cope with critical feedback and are “too soft” on their subordinates. The implications of this pervasive stereotype are that women experience unique challenges in the workplace. By learning how to mitigate this strong stereotype and developing emotional regulation strategies, participants will be prepared to make choices that are in alignment with their professional goals.
