How To Transition From A Functional Expert To A Leader: Strategies For Bridging The Gap

Event description
One of the most challenging transitions in the career of any successful individual is the moment when he or she moves up from a functional expert to leading a function and being responsible for the performance of a team. The leadership skills and attributes that make someone successful as a functional expert are quite different to those of the effective functional leader or enterprise leader.

Through this panel session the senior leaders will share their experiences in learning to move from specialist to generalist, warrior to diplomat and supporting others to lead.

From operations to business development, a diverse panel of senior leaders will share real strategies for identifying and maximizing career development opportunities and the unique paths they took to their leadership roles. The event will highlight how to overcome typical career challenges or pitfalls and new ways to apply your professional skills outside your current functional area or background.

Our keynote speaker, Susan Sweeney, will share her journey from functional brand expert to her new role as head of worldwide commercialization for Bristol-Myers Squibb, will explore how she established herself as a leader, leveraging her successful tenure in commercialization and operations. One of HBA's 2016 Rising Stars, Adrienne Gonzalez, will lead in a lively panel discussion of leaders from research and development, business development, commercial and human resources about strategies for stepping outside their comfort zone and maximizing career development opportunities in the near and long-term.

Attendees can expect to learn best practices for sparking personal growth and learning key core behaviors of successful leaders.
