HBA SAN DIEGO PRESENTS

Learning with the Prose Book Club: Grit, The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth

HBA San Diego has initiated a Virtual Book Club, Learning with the Prose. Regardless of what
phase of life, reading helps keep your brain sharp. Discussing what you’ve read with other
intelligent folks can challenge your understanding, and help you make new connections, boost
creativity, relieve stress, and create a social connection.

This third virtual book club is an opportunity to read “Grit: The Power of Passion and
Perseverance” by Angela Duckworth and then explore it further with a small group of HBA
members (not more than 12) who will meet online via Zoom. While highly interactive, the
discussion is facilitated by the San Diego HBA Chapter President, Susan Malecha.

Grit matters. How do we grow it?
Grit—it’s a buzz word. Who doesn’t want to have it? But what exactly is it and how do we get it?

Grit is the combination of passion and perseverance. Passion is the consistency of goals held
over long periods of time. It is not intensity or enthusiasm held for a brief moment. It is
endurance. Perseverance is the ability to overcome setbacks, put in hard work, and finish
things you’ve started. Grit predicts success, even when controlling for talent or IQ. That is,
between two people of the same talent level, a grittier person will enjoy more success.

We all know that talent and IQ are still important and still correlate with success. However, they
are not sufficient for high achievement. If you are talented, you get the most mileage by
combining talent and hard work. And if you are less talented, you can make up for it with grit,
exceeding someone with more talent who works less hard.
After reading Angela Duckworth’s book, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, we will
summarize key takeaways and apply it to our personal lives.

Learning with the Prose Book Club will meet in 2 sessions:
March 11, 2021 Part 1 5:00-6:00 pm PST
March 22, 2021 Parts 2 and 3 5:00-6:00 pm PST

A fixed mindset about ability leads to pessimistic explanations of adversity, and that, in turn,
leads to both giving up on challenges and avoiding them in the first place; growth mindset,
optimistic self-talk and perseverance over adversity. We look forward to a creative discussion.
