How Will the Transition of Fee-for-Service to Value Affect Hospital and Industry Relationships?

Event description
The transition from volume (fee-for-service) to value (fee-for-patient outcomes or the entire episode of care) has occurred in response to rising healthcare costs and is aimed at improving patient outcomes. This transformation of the volume-based model (example: pre-surgical imaging, surgery and post-surgical rehab) to an integrated, patient-outcomes model requires all parties to be responsible for patient improvement. This evolution will require defining measurements of “success,” integration of care delivery systems and affect all involved in healthcare. A panel of medical device, pharma and hospital leaders will discuss how healthcare and industry/hospital collaborations will be impacted by these changes.

Some questions to be addressed as leaders in the healthcare industry:
- What can we do to demonstrate real value to all parties in the system?
- What are our common goals, with a focus on patient care?
- How do we overcome mistrust between industry and providers?
- How might industry research and innovation be impacted?
- What new skills do our organizations need to build to be successful during this time of change?

Learning objectives
1. Define the new healthcare paradigm, global fee-for-patient outcomes or reimbursement based on “value”
2. Name best practices in partnerships between hospitals and medical device or pharmaceutical companies
3. Compare the hospital administrator perspectives of needs with that of the medical device and pharmaceutical industries
