Event description
This panel will cover the clinical research imperative of increasing racial and ethnic diversity in clinical research as the foundation for the practice of evidence-based medicine in a multicultural society. It is widely recognized that data supporting therapeutic options for people of color have been deficient because racially and ethnically diverse groups have been underrepresented in clinical trials. The shortage of data statistically powerful enough to support therapeutic options for people of color has yet to be broadly addressed by the pharmaceutical industry. Developing strategies early in the development process to reach this population will lead to good science and increased differentiation in clinical research.
The panelists will provide case histories to illustrate “best/winning” practices for successful culturally tailored recruitment and retention strategies.
• Historic overview of progress in increasing racial and ethnic diversity in clinical research
• Challenges that sites encounter in enrolling subjects in clinical trials
• Cultural and linguistic competency in protocol development
• How community mapping informs recruiting strategies and tactics
• Best practices for recruitment and retention of communities of color
