The first topic "A Both/And Approach to Competing Demands," will be presented by Dr. Wendy Smith from the University of Delaware's Lerner College of Business and Economics. We all face competing demands – tensions between work and life, living for today and planning for tomorrow, being competent and being likeable, performing effectively and learning new things, etc. Yet the question is how some people can more effectively deal with these tensions, while others get stuck in them. Wendy’s research finds that successfully people navigate tensions by adopting a both/and approach – recognizing the opposition but also the synergies, and managing to engage both simultaneously. In this talk, Wendy will share some of her research on how leaders adopt a both/and approach to be more creative and successful.

Session 2: HBA Master Class: Financial Leadership: Navigating Uncertainty - 27 April 2021
The second webinar of the HBA Master Class series, "Financial Leadership: Navigating Uncertainty" will be presented by Dr. David Becher from Drexel University's LeBow College of Business. This HBA master class is an interactive discussion that assesses the impact of the unfolding global pandemic and its impact on our markets and daily lives. We will begin with an understanding of market conditions within the U.S. and use this insight to better understand how COVID has altered our lives across a broad swath of our landscape. The goal of the discussion is to enhance a participant’s understanding of decision-making in a rapidly changing business environment. To appreciate the magnitude of the pandemic, this discussion will provide a broad overview of how the crisis has impacted financial markets, different industries, unemployment, and personal impact on decision-making in our daily lives. Special attention will be placed on understanding how the crisis impacts different stakeholders, with a focus on gender, income levels, race/minority businesses, and education levels. This Drexel-HBA Master Class will provide insight into how the crisis has fundamentally altered healthcare and will encourage participants to share their perspectives and questions throughout.
