Leading for the Long Game: Building Sustainable Careers
In today’s fast-paced, high-performing workplaces, we are all under constant pressure to deliver results, adapt to change, and maintain the engagement of our teams. Yet amidst all this activity, one essential question often goes unasked: how do we build careers and cultures that last?
The HBA Dublin Chapter is delighted to host "Leading for the Long Game: Building Sustainable Careers", an online workshop with leadership and organisational coach Caroline Hughes. In this thought-provoking session, Caroline will explore how leaders can create the conditions for sustained performance — where people not only achieve great results but do so without burning out themselves or their teams.
Drawing on her 20+ years of senior leadership experience and her extensive work as an ICF-accredited coach, Caroline will guide us through the core themes of psychological safety, burnout and recovery, and career development.
About the guest speaker:
Caroline Hughes works with leaders to achieve success without sacrificing wellbeing or connection in the process. As a mentor and coach, she partners with executives and organisations to build strong, sustainable leadership cultures that create real impact.
Her vision is to change the conversation about what it means to lead. Caroline believes that great leadership is not rooted in fear, pressure, or control — but in presence, integrity, and genuine care for people. She helps leaders move away from reactive, short-term thinking and towards creating environments that enable trust, innovation, and long-term growth.
Over the past two decades, Caroline has held senior leadership roles in both public and private sectors, including serving as Head of Change at the Central Bank of Ireland during the Irish Economic Bailout (Troika) Programme, and later as Global Director of Leadership Development at CRH plc, a Fortune 500 company with over 80,000 employees. These experiences gave her a front-row seat to the challenges of leading under intense pressure and navigating organisational transformation.
Caroline has seen first-hand how leaders, often with the best of intentions, can drive performance at the cost of engagement, energy, and trust — and how organisations can unintentionally create high-performance cultures without the right systems to support them. Her mission is to change that pattern.
At the heart of her philosophy is the belief that leadership is an inside-out job. Sustainable success starts with self-awareness, alignment, and authenticity. Without these, strategy and results are fleeting. In her coaching and leadership development work, Caroline is known for her ability to cut through the noise and get to the core of the issue — helping leaders and teams think differently about their challenges and step into their full potential.
Beyond her professional achievements, Caroline brings deep perspective and resilience to her work — qualities shaped by her love of the outdoors and adventure. She’s an avid hiker who has summited some of the world’s most breathtaking routes, including Everest Base Camp, Kilimanjaro, and the Annapurna Circuit. For Caroline, these expeditions serve as a metaphor for leadership itself: a test of endurance, clarity of vision, and the courage to keep moving forward even when the path isn’t clear.
