HBA ZURICH-ZUG AND HBA PARIS PRESENTS

Solidarity with the Asian Community

Asians in Europe today live with unwanted stereotypes that have been carelessly relayed over decades, reiterated across generations unchecked, told and enforced by others. The recent pandemic brought an exponential spike in assaults targeting this community based on these long-existing perceptions. For each recorded incident, many more remain unreported. Many countries in Europe do not allow for ethnicity-related data to be collected. This leaves the Asian community’s emotions unfelt and voices unheard.

HBA Paris and Zurich-Zug are organising a discussion forum centered on the members of HBA Europe who have Asian origins. This solidarity event is a safe environment whereby these members will tell true stories, share deep experiences, insights and observations about living as an Asian in Europe.

There will be a cocktail of emotions in the discussions arising from being the token minority to thriving in the environment, from wishing to remain inconspicuous to speaking up, from feeling like an eternal foreigner to being fully integrated and accepted into society, from shame to pride.

While we seek allyship in our mission towards gender equity, we must equally act as allies to our own members. By listening to lived experiences and recognising the complex issues, participants will be able to challenge and address conventional societal perceptions. As a result of this shared attitude, we are all able to progress in unity and solidarity.

We openly encourage participation in this empowering event, irrespective of origin. It will be lightly moderated by Mai Tran, volunteer of HBA Paris, and Sean Yap, board member of HBA Zurich – Zug, with complete support of their respective chapter board members, and fully endorsed by the HBA Europe Regional Council.
