HBA PHILADELPHIA PRESENTS

Leaders are Readers: Virtual Book Club June 2021: How to Avoid a Climate Disaster by Bill Gates

The number one urgent issue of our time is Climate Change. In "How to Avoid a Climate Disaster", Bill Gates demonstrates how it encompasses most other issues such as social justice and equality, economy, finance, global cooperation (or not), all the way to the future of survival of the planet. Gates chooses an optimistic approach, and, with a simple, almost primer style and clear examples, explains the underlying causes (choose topline or detailed), offers his comparative method of measurement (green premium=cost of alternative sources minus cost of current sources) and what can and must be done in order to reach net zero emissions /zero green premium to prevent human disaster.

Gates has spent a decade investigating the causes and effects of climate change. He is an expert, an activist, an international collaborator, and an investor. Some say he is pushing for a tech-only solution with a profit motive, some see him as one of the finest philanthropists of our time.

We will frame the issue, discuss Gate’s motives briefly to align, and then evaluate his recommendations with our focus on strategy, feasibility, and what is the path to least-suffering for our grandchildren and for the world. And touch on how the Biden Infrastructure plan does and does not align to the Gates plan.

The book is available on Amazon:

Studies have long shown a connection between professional success and reading habits. In addition to helping us broaden our perspectives, books have the power to transport us during times of social isolation. #HBAMidAtlantic is committed to helping members stay connected through virtual networking and professional development offerings like the members-only Virtual Book Club. The club meets every second Thursday of each month, and members register for each monthly activity separately.

This month's Book Club is facilitated by Heidi Zod, Strategic Planner at Bellus Health.
