HBA MILAN PRESENTS

HBA Milan Book Club - Persecuzione, il fuoco amico dei ricordi.

Alessandro Piperno is the first guest star of the HBA Milan Book Club.

Alessandro Piperno (Rome 1972) published the controversial essay Proust antiebreo (2000) and subsequently Il demone reazionario. Sulle tracce del Baudelaire di Sartre (2007) and Contro la memoria (2012). He achieved great success with the novel Con le peggiori intenzioni (2005, Campiello Opera Prima Prize), which was followed by Persecuzione (2010) and Inseparabili (2012, Strega Prize), or the diptych Il fuoco amico dei ricordi, winner of the Prix du Méilleur Livre Étranger. In 2013, he published the collection of essays Pubblici infortuni and in 2017, Il manifesto del libero lettore.

Alessandro will converse with us about his book, Persecuzione, il fuoco amico dei ricordi.

Rome, between July 1986 and August 1987: a compelling story, a narrator who remains unknown and a series of long, multi-range lunges into the "friendly fire of memories". A very current theme: slander, fake news, loss of reputation. Persecuzione tells the story of a decent man who falls victim to gossip, slander and social hatred, condemned, even before the judges, by public opinion and the silence of his family. It is a fierce and ironic novel written by an author who is often compared to the great Philip Roth in terms of style and inspiration. And it is perhaps no coincidence that Leo Pontecorvo's story is reminiscent of the protagonist of one of Roth's masterpieces, Professor Coleman Silk in La Macchia umana, who, like Leo, was also the victim of slander and an unfair trial.
