Essential Tactics to Combat Unconscious Bias

As HR/legal professionals and business executives, we know that workplace discrimination is unlawful, but what happens when discrimination is “unconscious”?

Unconscious bias can affect all aspects of the employment relationship from resume screening to promotions and performance evaluations. Not only does unconscious bias expose employers to discrimination lawsuits, but it can also negatively impact your workplace culture resulting in costly turnover, stunted productivity and loss of business. As a result, 25 percent of US businesses now provide unconscious bias training.

“Unconscious discrimination” or “unconscious bias” applies to how we perceive others and this type of bias stems from stereotypes or pre-programmed attitudes which may have, but may have often not event be aware of. This presentation will identify signs of unconscious bias within organizations and will focus on results-oriented tactics to combat unconscious bias in your workplace. Specifically, this presentation will provide a better understanding of your own unconscious biases and with the tools needed to interrupt and neutralize these biases. We will also discuss results-oriented strategies and infrastructure that leading organizations are putting in place to combat unconscious bias.

As an employment law advisor, training instructor and industry thought leader, Kathern Nukk-Freeman, Esq., co-founder and president of SHIFT HR Compliance Training, LLC is a frequent presenter on the topic of unconscious bias in the workplace. Mrs. Nukk-Freeman will discuss how to identify this form of bias and develop tactics to combat unconscious bias in your workplace to create a better work environment and decrease legal exposure.
