Unlocking the Science of Personality: The "Big 5" Traits

Understanding the science of personality can help attract, retain and engage your ideal team or client. Before diving into how understanding personality can improve your company, it’s worth noting that there is a lot out there about personality. Myers-Briggs, DiSC and Enneagram, all of those models have shown little or no peer-reviewed evidence.

However, when it comes to established science about personality, look to what psychologists call, “The Big 5.” These personality traits have been rigorously examined and tested in thousands of published studies. In short, this theory posits that everyone ranks high or low in five specific personality traits:

• Openness: how adventurous, creative or open to new ideas someone is
• Conscientiousness: how organized, detail-oriented or orderly someone is
• Extroversion: how much someone likes being around people, how outgoing and talkative someone is
• Agreeableness: how easygoing someone is, how cooperative they are and how easy it is for them to be on a team
• Neuroticism: how much of a worrier someone is, how reactive and emotionally stable they are

Understanding where you and your team fall on the “Big 5” scale will help your team develop cohesion and will help engagement with clients. Whether you are an independent contributor or the leader of a team, you will learn to understand your own personality and how to decode other personality types. We also will discuss the body language cues that tend to align with each personality trait.
