HBA SUISSE ROMANDE PRESENTS

HBA Suisse Romande presents: POTENTI'ELLE IN SCIENCE

Historically, young girls have been directed towards games that typically develop caring skills (e.g. dolls or stuffed animals) or towards play “pretend” for traditionally female jobs (e.g., housekeeper, hairdresser, cashier, or nurse). Young boys have been more often encouraged to play with toys that build their spatial awareness (e.g., toy cars) or develop their understanding of how things work (e.g., Lego).
Cultural stereotypes and societal conditioning impact young women’s future aspirations and their preference for university degrees in non-STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) subjects, thus affecting their career path.
The Swiss Federal Statistical Office reported that in 2020 fewer than 20% of professors in STEM disciplines were female. OECD reports the proportion of women in STEM to be as low as 22%.
This needs to change! STEM should not have a masculine image!
To celebrate the International Women’s Day in Science, this event aims to inspire young girls to learn more about careers in STEM.
After some keynote speeches, students ranging from 8 to 18 years old will have an opportunity to engage in dedicated workshops for each age group led by women with an inspiring career in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, academia and NGOs. The young attendees, and their accompanying adult, will engage with role models from STEM disciplines and get a real understanding of their diverse academic and professional experiences.
